Painting: Saint George and the Dragon, 1460
In this lesson students are asked to describe the painting, paying attention to colours, layout, geometrical patterns, costumes, animals, mythological characters, body language and posture, etc... They can retell the legend in their own words and then compare it with the one in the notes. This picture by Paolo Uccello condenses two episodes of the story of Saint George: the defeat of the dragon and the princess dragging it on a leash. Students may try to interpret the picture again, as if they weren't familiar with the tale and didn't know the sequence of events.
